Robert Shaw apparently thrashed everyone at ping-pong.) Shire set up a minor-key funk vamp, and built the entire rest of the score on Schoenbergian principles, using a row of twelve notes to build the entire thing. Literally every cue in the film is based on that one tone-row (this is my transcription):

The fact that the Buffalo Bills For Ever Not Just When We Win Sean Mcdermott Josh Allen Stefon Diggs Signature Shirt besides I will buy this row featured so many minor thirds gave it a jazzy feel, and the result is a brilliantly nerve-jangling score, reminiscent of Don Ellis’ similarly hectic work on The French Connection, or Jerry Fielding’s work with Sam Peckinpah, but more fun. For the end titles, Shire’s then-wife Talia advised him that what he’d written wasn’t romantic enough and it needed a bit more of a love-letter-to-New-York feel, so Shire constructed an entire middle section, with jazz guitars and ruminating trombones, before coming back to the ruthless riff for the climactic crescendo: One film composer who routinely gets less than his due is Georges Delerue, who won numerous awards but for films which are relegated to ‘foreign’ or ‘arthouse’ because they weren’t in English. He worked a lot with Truffaut, but my favourite piece of his music is his justly celebrated ‘Camille’ theme from Jean-Luc Godard’s 1963 New Wave classic Le Mépris (Contempt). It was reused in Scorsese’s Casino, but its proper place is in Godard’s searing portrait of a failing marriage: Godard being Godard, he used this theme in a way that first exploited its yearning melancholy, then undercut it, then exploited it again, until the viewer gets the point that this is how music in film works on you.
