They definitely saw the connection. Incidentally, the Swastika is not called “Swastika” in German. It is known as the Hakenkreuz – the Hooked Cross. I sometimes wonder why we didn’t translate Hooked Cross to English like we did Iron Cross? Maybe we liked how “alien” the word Swastika sounded? They would see the swastika as a descendant of old icons that had been used in Northern Europe for thousands of years by vikings, and ancient Germans, and Templar Knights. They would maybe even find it bore a nostalgic resemblance to the flag of the old German Empire. But now you know the German roots of the Swastika AKA “The Hooked Cross”. And you can understand that for a German back then, it didnt have much to do with Hindus. If I see some one with this tattooed to their head I think, don’t talk to him and don’t let him know I’m Jewish.
