But eventually, inevitably, that will come to an end. Maybe Paramount+ will get squeezed out of the market. Maybe poor management decisions will result in unpopular shows and declining viewers. Eventually, shows will dry up and drop off the schedule and won’t be replaced. Star Trek will go off the air as it did when the original series or Enterprise did with no clear plan for its return. And probably a little while after that, they’ll try again. Maybe a new movie, maybe a new series, maybe some kind of format we haven’t invented yet. If it works, that’ll go on for a while in a new cycle, and if not, it’ll vanish. If that attempt doesn’t work, maybe they’ll eventually try another. But eventually, new Star Trek series/films/whatever will become consistently unprofitable. It’ll go the way of previously popular properties and genres like Tarzan and the Lone Ranger. Eventually, they’ll stop trying, but we’ll only know that it ended in retrospect when we realize that they haven’t made new Star Trek stuff in a long time. The franchise will have ended not with a bang, but with a whimper.
