In this way, DS9, despite itself, reveals the hypocrisy of what the Federation (and our own developed society) stands for. And, it’s wonderful sci-fi.

He is often faced with impossible decisions. He is a single parent, a widow, an ambitious career minded gentleman a friend to some a bitter rival to others. Later in the series he has a long term romance with a character (not the flings most other characters in Star trek have which are relegated to occasional cameos like Vash or Kheyler). I also find his relationship with every character on the show is very well defined. Jadzia is his mentor/buddy/… and other? It’s weird and very Trek. He’s a renaissance man, like all good captains. But most importantly, he’s flawed. Has Picard ever made a bad decision? Has Picard ever doubted a decision he’s made? Picard’s impeccable track record makes him a character to admire, but sometimes not easy to relate to.
